This blog is a set of working notes. Some are based on travel, like a trip to China, or London, or a walk around the corner. All the notes are about experiences that have, with good fortune, brought change and growth. They are also an outgrowth of my fiction–a companion piece to what I write–the real work.

Doug, you don’t know me, but I met Ellen directly through Katherine’s adoption. I am delighted to be able to follow you with this journey of your daughter. My three daughters (cambodian & vietnamese) go through what Katherine does EVERY time we go ANYWHERE in Asia!! They hate it also, and are 23, 17 & 16!! Just now, after many years, they are not a) embarrassed to have have a black father & white mother, b) becoming proud of being Asian!!
